Are Dragons Real Creatures?

This article started off life as a piece of work that was covering the history of (stone) gargoyles that are placed on buildings throughout Europe. I recently watched a short witchcraft video covering the subject on YouTube and I felt it was something I should cover here.

So I dived into the topic and I was more than a little surprised by what I found…

Are There Real Dragons?

So, are dragons real creatures…and what is their link to the impressive stone gargoyles we see scattered across the architecture of Europe?

Let’s take a closer look…

Apparently, there is a legend from Northern France that originated in the 7th century. This legend tells of a dragon that spent many years terrorizing the people of this French region.

Eventually a strange priest turned up on the scene and convinced the locals that he had the power to destroy the dragon. He would use this power as long as they all agreed to convert to Christianity.

The locals were desperate for help, and had little choice – they agreed to the priest’s terms. The priest then constructed a large wooden cross and went off into the wilderness in search of the winged beast.

When he eventually found the creature he used the wooden cross to hypnotize it and calm it down. He was then able to walk the dragon back into the local town center.

Once there, the priest set the great beast on fire and the locals gathered around to watch their nemesis burn to death. The head of the dragon would not burn – so the locals cut it off the smoldering carcass of a body.

Now, not many people were educated back in the 7th century, so they were unable to read or write. This meant that the locals were unable to let the rest of Europe know what had happened with their dragon problem.

They finally decided to hang the dragon head off the roof of their newly built church as a message to the outside world – dragons DID exist and priests held the power to destroy them.

Apparently, this incident with the dragon’s head being hung from the church, is the true origin of gargoyles.

Recent Sightings

The most recent sighting of a winged dragon-like creature was published to the world in 2010, by Cryptozoology News. They claimed they had interviewed a British man (Alex) who was living in Spain.

Alex claimed that he was visiting the Southern part of the country when he experienced a terrifying encounter.

He was awoken in the early hours of the morning by a horrific screaming sound. He claimed this scream sounded a lot like a woman in some kind of agonizing pain.

He leapt out of bed and made it to the window in time to see a winged creature take off into the night sky. Luckily, Alex was able to get a good look at the creature before it took flight – he claimed it had the body of the dog, with wings, but no front legs.

He also claimed that it moved in jerky motions – much like the movement of a toy robot.

Now over to you!

  1. Very interesting, because Dragons are a very important part of Chinese culture too (I was born in a year of the Dragon!). We need to ask: If they have never existed, why do they appear in so many different cultures around the world?

    1. Very good point Fred – thanks for taking the time to read the article and leave your opinion!
It’s certainly true that A LOT of cultures have diagrams/stories/legends involving dragons (stretching back 1000’s of years!)

      1. Ahhh, most of these cultures appeared a long time after the dinosaurs were here (Don’t listen to everything they tell you on Jurassic Park!) 🙂

  2. Interesting article, I’ve also read that the historical accounts of peoples seeing creatures like this can sometimes be started by people mistaking deformed or unknown creatures for mythical creatures, such as sailors and pirates from years ago mistaking the dugong for a mermaid, but also this earth is a very big place with a lot of it still largely unexplored who knows what could still be out there, people are still discovering new species of animals even today.

    1. Good point Angel – and it certainly makes sense. Way back when people were much more easily convinced by what they saw – deformed creatures could fit this bill!
