  1. This looks intriguing! Ghost hunting is not a common subject, or so I would think.
Just out of interest is there a huge market for this sort of thing?
I personally don’t believe in ghosts but I do find the topic interesting and amusing 🙂
I’ve never heard of Rich Newman, is he an expert in this field?

    1. Hi Lynne,
Yes there is a very big market for ghost hunting equipment these days due to the more reasonable price levels on each device. A simple search through Google+ or YouTube will bring up numerous ghost hunting communities which are free to join 🙂

  2. Great review. I am not a great personal believer in the paranormal but my sister happens to be very spiritual and would probably be the type of person that might purchase something like this after your review. 🙂

  3. What a very interesting book! I love anything paranormal as I have experienced it directly, and am always willing to learn more. I am definitely considering getting this book. I am moving to another state to live with my sister and her house has had a ghost living there since they bought it.

I have experienced “her” directly when I have visited a few times, and am looking forward to living there and getting to know “her” better. Thanks for reviewing this book, it looks like an excellent read!

    1. Wow that sounds pretty cool Jean – make sure you stop back here and let us know how the contact went 🙂

  4. I had no idea that there were books out there which guided you through ghost hunting!
I have actually had an encounter many years back and it was quite frightening, but exciting at the same time, Don’t really know what to make of it, but I’ll never forget it, and I’ve not had a repeat of it either.
I think this is a fascinating subject, unexplained mysteries really intrigue me.
So, is ghost hunting something that anyone could learn – is it a skill? What is the purpose of ghost hunting?

    1. Hello Grant!!!
Yes ghost hunting is a subject that anyone can pick up – as long as they have a ( proper ) interest in it of course!
These days the equipment has come down in price leaving amateurs a great starting point 🙂

  5. Hi
what an awesome site! I haven’t actually seen many ghost hunter sites but I guess there are a number if you search. I really enjoyed your site. When I was younger and just out of university I lived in a very haunted house, an old Victorian cottage located near Timaru in NZ. Regardless of what people said or believed anyone who ever lived in that house for any length of time was an absolute believer. It was always located in one room, a tiny bedroom just off the living room. When it appeared there was just an awful feeling of sadness and a terrible smell – a bit like rotten fish. I assure you I’m relatively sane and i experienced it many times- always scared the daylights out of me. The owner of the house never worried and just said ‘oh that’s old Tom’ and used to tell him to get lost and go home to the light – and swear on my name as soon as she said that the smell was instantly gone. Have you ever heard of this type of phenomena?

    1. Hi Jason,
Yes I’ve often heard that a strange smell can follow a spirit around – it doesn’t happen with all of them but there are many reports of it taking place!
Interesting to hear about ‘old Tom’ – seems like he was part of the furniture there by the time you moved in 🙂

  6. Oh come on, ghosts don’t really exist, do they? Surely if everyone that died was to stick around as ghosts, the world would be too full of them.

I think ghosts are explained by various rational phenomena. For example, the mind is a very powerful thing. I actually just finished read a book by neurologist Olive Sacks called Hallucinations, which talks about the various brain disorders that can cause people to hallucinate. I think most reports of ghosts are probably due to this. Some may even be drug induced.

But I suppose that wouldn’t explain the situations where multiple experience the same thing. What do you think?

    1. Hi Marcus – not a believer eh?
Don’t worry, we accept all opinions here ( even the one’s we don’t agree with LOL ). I’m interested in the book you mentioned by neurologist Olive Sacks – I’ll have to look into that a bit further!
Thanks for stopping by and introducing us to this title 🙂

  7. Hey, Chris

I have always had a fascination with ghosts, but I don’t know what I would actually do if I came across one lol.

This Ghost hunting for beginners book sounds great and is definitely something I would love to read to gain a few tips from for when I’m feeling brave enough.

What I would really love to learn is how to communicate with family members on the other side because it would be nice just to hear from them 🙂

    1. Hi Neil,
I know what you mean about contacting departed family members – it’s a subject close to my heart as well! We’ll probably be publishing an article here on that subject in the near future 🙂

  8. This looks pretty awesome Chris,
I’m actually intrigued to check this out! You really have a talent in writing reviews, they are quite enjoyable to read, like you’re born storyteller. Although it may seem like not many believe in ghosts, a lot of them who actually experience paranormal events will definitely be interested in checking this book out. I actually have friends who are into ghost hunting, will definitely pull them in too 😀 . Just out of curiosity, have you ever had paranormal encounters before?

    1. Hi Riaz,
I’ve been on a few ghost hunting excursions before and we’ve had varying results – I haven’t been on any for a while now mind. Glad you like the style of my content…hope you enjoy the book 🙂

  9. Great information here.
Thank you for making your review so easy to read and follow. I especially appreciate the pros and cons.
I would bet that this is a growing interest with more and more shows about Ghost Hunting showing up on TV!
You say that it is expensive, but personally I would think that getting a guide for under $20 that is as rich in information as you say would be a steal!

  10. Hi,

This seems like a good book. Yes the price is slightly high but from the sounds of it the book is worth the money.

I’ve never read any of Neuman’s books before. Do you think this would be a good book to buy as a first time buy for a new ghosthunter? I know you said that this book is good for beginners but what about this as the very first ghosthunting book for someone?

    1. Hi there Robert,
Yes I believe this is an excellent choice of guide for newcomers to the subject. Well laid out in a step-by-step process.

  11. Great review of Ghost Hunters for Beginners. I’m not suprised with on the new shows on paranormal activity that more books like this one are hitting the shelfs. This is a fascinating subject and one that I do believe in but don’t follow much because it produces a little fear I think. Is ghost hunting something you do? I will have to get a copy of this book just for the fear factor.

  12. Hi Chris,
Interesting topic, is that we can hunt the ghosts if they exist? I personally think so, or at least is the human power left volatile without shelter if that person did not have a quiet life. I will read this book when I have time; thanks very valuable information and I congratulate you for bringing this controversial topic up.

    1. Cheers Renan,
Glad we were able to grab your attention with this article! Enjoy the book ( if you decide to try it! )

  13. Hi Chris,

Back again to check out your site.
Your reviews are fascinating as are the comments from everyone.

I was wondering if you had an opinion on why you believe spirit hangs around after death (if that’s what you think) or are you more into the theory that it’s just an impression or vibration left behind…a bit like a memory and not really the spirit at all?

    1. Hi Jason, Nice to see you back here again!
Why exactly spirits appear is anyone’s guess in my book – personally I think each one has a different reason behind their appearing linked directly to how their life panned out.

  14. Hi Chris – Once again you’ve touched on a very interesting subject. Do ghosts exist?
I know the answer from personal experience. A lot of people actually believe once your gone your gone and that’s the end of it.
Myself I’m not so sure. I have learned to block them out totally. (that sounds contradictory I know)
Can’t understand why people want to hunt them, just go about your daily routine with a clear open mind and you’ll find them.
    Thanks for sharing

      1. Hi Chris – I didn’t mean it to sound like it did. I know people want answers. What I meant is they are all around. Virtually everywhere you go, you just need to know how to see them, or in my case how to ignore them

  15. I’m a big fan of ghost hunting. This book looks good! I think approaching the paranormal purely on a scientific level is good. Yet after watching those Medium shows they seem to be able to connect to ghosts very well. Perhaps a combination of techniques would be great? Is this book geared more toward the scientific approach, or does help the reader to train their intuition, like a psychic medium?

    1. Well I suppose there’s a little bit of both in there Michael, but it’s mainly centered around how to use equipment and basic techniques of ghost hunting.

  16. Hi Chris,
Ever since I was young, I never wanted to watch any movies dealing with ghosts or supernatural beings because they frighten me. To this day, I do not watch these types of movies. Even though I don’t believe in ghosts, I think your post is great in that it tells the visitor where to go to get a reliable source on the topic and what to expect. Great post!

  17. I have a fascination with ghosts and stories of paranormal activity. Although I always tell people that I do not believe in ghosts.

I love reading about this kind of stuff so I think that I would probably find Ghost Hunting for Beginners quite the read.

Do you know if it is available for Kobo?

    1. Hi Simone,
I know there are a lot of digital formats out there for this but I’m unsure about Kobo – click the link and check out what formats Amazon is currently offering 🙂

  18. Hello Chris!

I love when I find the article of this kind. I had no idea that these kind of books/manuals existed, even though I know about the subject and have a certain deal of knowledge about it in general.
I checked the link for the book and paperback is only $10.25. That`s cheap, I will probably get it when I have the time to put into it. I will save the link.

One question; do you have any numbers of how many people are actively interested in ghost hunting?

    Thanks for the article!

    1. Well exact numbers are pretty hard Igor – I will say that there are a lot more hunters these days than there used to be! 🙂

  19. Firstly, I have to tell you that I had bookmarked your site. This is something that intrigues me to the core. I have been looking around for something to start me off into this exciting world of paranormal happenings. And here you have a ghost hunting book for beginners. I am definitely going to check this out. Thanks Chris.

  20. This is very interesting! A book that teaches people what to look for when looking for ghost! Does the book also cover how to use EVP’s, Spirit boxes and other electromagnetic mediums to invoke or communicate with ghost similar to the guys at Ghost Adventures? Do ghost appear only when a source of energy is present such as an electromagnetic energy that gives off from people or electric outlets? If so, Is it still haunting?

  21. I have always been interested in movies and stories about ghosts. I personally have never had any kind of ghost/haunting experience – but this book could be an interesting read. Does it actually tell you how to look for paranormal activity? Basically I could start in my own house if I wanted to? Seems very intriguing. Thanks for sharing.

  22. this is cool…My partner watches all those ghost hunter shows and is a full believer in the paranormal…this could be the Christmas gift for this year…I must admit, whist I may not be a believer, there is something fun about the idea of going on a ghost hunt…maybe I should buy this book for Christmas and spend the festive time hunting ghosts haha

  23. Man, this site is full of intriguing reviews! I’ve just read your review on the Betty & Barney Hill UFO Experience and got that one for my Kindle. Now this one about ghost hunting… Guess I know which book to read after I’m done with the B&B book 🙂

Oh, and I love the picture from Paranormal Activity 2! That xbox kinect effect creeps me out 😉

  24. I’m still not convinced that ghosts actually exist, especially since I recently read the book Hallucinations by Dr Oliver Sacks. In it he talks about how common hallucinations actually are, but people are afraid to talk about them for fear of being declared mad. But it’s quite common for people to have brain abnormalities that can make them see things that are not there, but which appear totally vivid as if they are really there.

So I don’t know how useful it would be to go ghost hunting, because I don’t think there’s much chance of seeing one unless the person has a brain abnormality or has just taken a drug.

Have you seen any ghosts yourself?

    1. LOL, by the sound of things I don’t think this book is for you Marcus! To succeed at anything worthwhile you need to keep an open mind – something you may not possess judging by your comment!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your opinion on the subject 🙂

  25. Hi Chris,
I can’t say whether I believe or not, because I have never had an experience before. I have always wondered if ghosts are actually demons making everybody believe that they were ghosts.
My daughter is a believer though. When she was renting a room from my son, she saw a figure crouching on the corner of her ceiling, where it met the wall. She turned on the light and it disappeared. When she turned it back off again, the figure was gone. She had seen another figure in a different place, but in the same room.
When she moved, she had another experience, but this one was more frightening to her. She was laying on her couch (in the dark) and heard something that sounded like and animal walking towards her. She started to sit up and suddenly felt pressure on her chest and heard a faint growl in her ear. After a few seconds, the pressure lifted and the sound was gone. She never laid on the couch at night again in that house.
The people that owned the house tried really hard to get her to buy it, instead of renting it. They were going to give her a really good price on it. I wonder if something similar happened to them?
    ~ Melinda

    1. Hi Melinda,

Well it definitely sounds like the previous owners knew something was up there – very strange happenings! Thank you for stopping by and leaving this comment – interesting stuff!

  26. I’ve been watching a lot of ghost hunting shows on cable of late, as many channels seem to be airing this type of program at the moment. It is an interesting subject. Still not sure if I believe in ghosts, though.

It’s interesting to see that there are books teaching you how to hunt ghosts. I even read an article on a site just the other day, reviewing a product that records ghosts speaking. Seems like this topic is growing in popularity by the day these days.

  27. Hey Chris,

I have always been fascinated towards the spirits and so called “Ghosts” that co exists with us in this world. This books seems to be really interesting read to understand how we can connect to their world. Will surely check back for more on this stuff. Have you had any experiences that you can share or some real stories that you found to be really insightful?

    1. Hi Chax – a simple search around this site should answer that question for you! 🙂

I have come across many interesting and insightful paranormal reports but I can’t fit them all into a comment reply!

  28. Ghost hunting is something that I would like to try one day. I think if someone is very interested in ghost hunting, they should try this book.

I went through amazon and came across this book and really fascinated me. I think there is a lot in the world that we do not know of when it comes to the spiritual realm. Do you have any experience in ghost hunting?

    1. When I was younger I used to take part in hunts now and again but I’m afraid work commitments sort of stopped that in the end! 🙂

  29. Ahahahaha great post! I haven’t imagined till now a book about ghost hunting. I actually love things about ghosts and i believe it’s not only a concept, but i believe that they really exist. I also read frequently creepy pasta and other horror platforms. It seems like a fun book to read. Good post!

  30. Wow I got spooked. Why would I want to go ghost hunting? lol Hell No.. I don’t even have the mind for it..
But I wish those that find this book intriguing to buy it. WoW there is even a community for ghost hunters online? So all this years I watched ghost busters wasn’t a waste….

  31. Hi, conversation writing style is the best to follow and keep your goose bumps on 🙂 Rich’s book sounds like a 240 pages of good read..specially the true ghost stories! I like that there is also Kindle version. And it also sounds like a good addition to Ghost hunting instrument!

  32. Hi Chris

What an interesting site you have. I have seen a few documentaries on “ghosts” and I have to say I find it so intriguing although it actually terrifies me.

I do think a lot of people are interested in ghost hunting, I know tours are very popular so I think your review of ghost hunting for beginners will appeal to a lot of people.

  33. Hi Chris

What an interesting topic. I’ve always been intrigued about ghost hunting but to be honest once the lights were turned off I would quit! Don’t mind admitting been a chicken at all!

I’ve watched some really interesting documentaries as well, you never know whether they are true not. I think the book will be a great buy just for curiosity reasons. Great reading Chris.

  34. Heya, this is a great article but do you agree that the cons section of your review should also include not getting involved in ghost hunting if you are not well experieced in the topic? I know a lot of people who just want to try ghost hunting after reading a book, but once they do it, they wish they never did due to spirits haunting them

  35. I dont agree that people should ghost hunt on the whim, so you should definitely be knowledgeable about what your getting yourself into. Although I really commend your information, I think that there are people who ghost hunt and they end up being haunted due to the opening up of spirits which they are not well versed in.

  36. Wow, this sounds incredibly interesting. I didn’t know ghost hunting was an actual thing although I have no doubt that spirits do exist. Is it wise to actively go in search of them though? And I’m definitely extremely curious as to why hauntings happen in the first place. My aunt always claimed she had a ghost living in her house and I always believed in such things. I didn’t know there were people who go out chasing them though. very interesting review. Thank you

  37. Interesting. I had not thought of ghost hunting as something a “beginner” could learn. I like the idea there are kits. Does the book recommend you buy equipment?I am not even sure what equipment would be needed but it seems like a ghost hunter would need something to read the presence of the supernatural.

  38. Hmm…I’m actually a bit tempted to possibly add this to my future hobby list….once I’m done with all my goals off of my bucketlist I mean. I’m not a firm believer of ghosts. I believe in aliens but ghosts…I won’t fully believe it until I see it…But I’m very curious. But I disregard stories of ghosts people tell me, because I need an actual proof. But as I said, I’m very curious. So I even drove hundreds of miles to stay over night at a haunted house by myself hoping that maybe I’ll experience something. But nothing really happened. I was half disappointed and half relieved. But it was something that was on my bucketlist so I was glad to have it crossed off. I even bought a ouija board to play it with a friend at a local haunted place, but still nothing. I don’t believe in it but I’m really curious…haha yes, I’m a weirdo.

  39. Wow, I really loved this review, some years ago i remember I used to watch a lot of shows about ghosts and haunted houses, so I know something about this topic. I wanted to buy a book about ghost hunting for a long time, but I didn’t have any recommendation and I didn’t really know what to choose.
Seems like I know now. 😉

  40. Hey thank you for this article. I enjoyed reading this and it is intrguing to read. I don’t want to see ghosts or feel them. But it is interesting. I have some questions.Did you try ghost hunting for yourself? Is it enjoyable or scary or both at the same time?

    1. I used to john yes, but I’m so busy running this website (and it’s sister site!) these days I hardly get the chance to go out in the field!

    2. I used to john yes, but I’m so busy running this website (and it’s sister site!) these days I hardly get the chance to go out in the field!

  41. Hey thank you for this article. I enjoyed reading this and it is intrguing to read. I don’t want to see ghosts or feel them. But it is interesting. I have some questions.Did you try ghost hunting for yourself? Is it enjoyable or scary or both at the same time?

  42. Hey Chris

Awesome website Bro. How did you come up with this topic to create a website on? That’s great. I don’t believe in ghost but your website is pretty amusing.

How did you manage to have an image pop out when hovering over it? Is that a plugin, or does it come with your theme?

  43. The possibility that there may be ghosts out there has always intrigued me. I had no idea that I could buy a book on hunting for them!
I am open minded and willing to accept there may be ghosts and I love a ghost story so I might just give this a try.

  44. Really enjoyed reading your review Chris. Thanks for taking the time to write it. I’ve always had an interest in the paranormal, wondering if it’s real or not and love watching the various ghost hunting shows on TV.

A part of me would love to go on a ghost hunt with other like minded people but the other part of me is too much of a scaredy cat and would probably make the worst ghost hunter ever as if there was any unexplained phenomena I’d be too busy running away down the corridor to film it 🙂
